Frequently Asked Questions
a2 Milk™ is pure and natural dairy milk, additive free and with no added permeate. It contains only the A2 type of beta-casein protein because it comes from specially selected cows that naturally produce only the A2 protein and do not produce A1 protein.
Some people who have trouble drinking most regular milk say they can feel the difference of a2 Milk™, it feels better in their bodies and more comfortable to digest.
Yes, a2 Milk™ is naturally occurring cows’ milk; it’s not a result of a technological process or genetic engineering. We simply select cows that produce only A2 protein.
Most regular cows’ milk contains a combination of two main types of beta-casein protein, namely A1 and A2. What makes a2 Milk™ special is the absence of the A1 protein. It is the A1 protein that many people seek to avoid by switching from regular cows’ milk to a2 Milk™. a2 Milk™ uses comprehensive herd selection to choose milk from cows which don’t produce the A1 protein.
Yes, a2 Milk™ contains similar amounts of calcium and other important minerals as other unfortified milks.
The single most important factor in producing our delicious a2 Milk™ is to find the right dairy cows. Unlike most other dairy farmers, our farmers' exclusively select cows that naturally produce milk that only contains the A2 type of beta-casein. This is done by using a simple and non-invasive DNA test, which analyses a sample of hair from the tail of each dairy cow. These cows are then milked separately to produce pure and natural a2 Milk™.
a2 Milk™ is widely available in supermarkets in New Zealand.
Yes, a2 Milk™ contains levels of lactose comparable to that of standard milk. If the switch to a2 Milk™ allows you to enjoy dairy again, this is occurring in the presence of lactose.
Healthy, well-cared-for animals are vital to producing safe, high-quality milk.
While it may sound simple, cows are the absolute core of every dairy farm, and their health and welfare is of paramount importance to us. We know there is a close relationship between well-cared for cows and good milk production which is why animal husbandry is a source of pride for every farmer.
We are committed to managing animals responsibly and continuously improve animal health and welfare outcomes as well as eliminating practices that contravene the internationally recognised “Five Freedoms”.
If anyone identifies an animal welfare issue on a farm, New Zealand has an early response system set up with the Ministry for Primary Industries and DairyNZ to protect the animals.
In all regions, we build on existing animal welfare legislation and work with industry bodies while ensuring our practices are verified by the New Zealand Government. Our responsibility to animal welfare extends to wherever we operate in the world. We share our knowledge of best practice with other countries and assess the welfare of animals as part of our on-going quality checks in overseas markets.
Absolutely not! a2 Milk™ is obtained naturally from cows specially selected for their genetic makeup.
